The WSET Level 1 Award in Beer is for those preparing for, or employees starting their first job in beer and wanting to climb the hospitality ladder

What you'll learn in the Level 1 Beer course

  • The main ingredients used to make beer

    • Malt and other sugar sources, water, hops, yeast​

  • The main production steps used to make beer

    • Malting, Brewing

​

  • The principles of successful beer storage, service and food pairing

    • Beer storage and service: keeping beer fresh, glassware, pouring keg beer, opening and pouring bottled beer, service temperature

    • Common beer faults: staling, light strike (skunking), bacterial infection

    • Food and beer: Preferences, sensitivities, interactions, application and other considerations

  • The characteristics of a range of key beer styles

    • Malt-driven styles: American or international pale lager, Munich Helles, Blonde ale,  Munich Dunkel, Brown ale, Porter and Stout, Barley wine

    • Hop-driven styles: Traditional Czech / German Pilsner, Bitter, American pale ale, American IPA, Hazy IPA

    • Yeast driven styles: Weissbier, Dubbel, Tripel, Saison, Witbier

    • Sour styles: Berliner Weise, Geuze (Gueuze)

 

Upon completion you’ll gain a globally recognised qualification and the knowledge to help you explore the world of beer in greater depth.

Entry Requirements

There is no pre-requisite Beer knowledge

required for this qualification

 

However, you must be over 18 years of age at the time of booking

Course Delivery

The Level 1 Award in Beer has a requirement of 6 hours of taught delivery, including the exam,

plus time for revision

Assessment

The Level 1 Beer assessment is by a closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions within 45-minutes.

The pass mark is 70%

Special Consideration

If you feel you were at a disadvantage during the exam due to, for example, illness, you can submit a special consideration request to us. We will pass this on to WSET for their assessment. The form (on request) must be sent to Vinum Vitae within 5 working days after your exam date. Please see our APP Policies document for further information.
